Space Battleship Yamato 2199 Report 61

Yamato 2199 activity continued its steady decline into the month of August, which is an inevitable sign of both age and the rise of Yamato 2202. Nevertheless, seeds that were planted last year continue to bloom this year in the form of online activity along with the biannual boost of new doujinshis at Comiket. Here’s a roundup of all the August action.

August 1: Game news

Version 2.0 of the mobile game Battlefield Infinity got underway for real this month, and going by the promotional text its campaigns seem to have shifted away from anime-based scenarios into new territory. This is reflected in all-new character art that resets the overall tone. We’ll continue to track this information as long as it’s there and hope to one day see all this design work in book form.

Until then, a wealth of images can be found at the official BFI Twitter page here.

August 2: NTT Side Story, chapter 8

This ongoing Yamato 2199 side-story got a new installment at the NTT Telecommunications website. As of this writing, it’s been over a month since it appeared, but the schedule for these has never exactly been reliable.

A dream of the 21st and 22nd centuries ~
the common language of engineers

Captain Okita was dimly aware that he was dreaming during a warp. The men before him were a Japanese technical team created by the imagination. But he took comfort that Shima’s shout of “Warp completed!” would wake him up. In the meantime…

Sanada and Niimi walked the floor of the data center.

The 21st century engineers worked busily, taking an intense interest in maintaining the data center. Sanada approached them, but hesitated for a moment before speaking. What could a 22nd century engineer and a 21st century engineer talk about with each other?

Sanada remembered the voice of Captain Okita: “It’s not just learning technology. We can learn a lot from the hearts that supported the technology.”

Sanada called out decisively.

“Hi.”

“Hello.”

They didn’t seem to feel that Sanada’s presence was unusual.

“You’re the ones who come from Yamato. We’ve heard about you. We’re the maintenance staff in charge of the NTT Smart Connect data center in Umeda.”

“I’m Sanada, the technical chief of Space Battleship Yamato.”

After that, conversation ended. Sanada keenly felt the technological walls between the 21st and 22nd centuries. Niimi was also perplexed, not knowing what to say. Sanada had a sudden whim. He reached into his pocket, pulled out a 22nd century information terminal, and handed to an engineer of the data center.

Sanada: “This is part of you from the future.”

Umeda: “This is the future of Japanese technology…!?”

The engineers of the data center showed intense curiosity for the first time at this technology. They passed the information terminal around to each other, and it shone brilliantly in their hands under the dazzling light of the data center.

Inwardly, Sanada thought, “That’s not just an ordinary machine they have in their hands. It was said that humanity’s IT technology would evolve endlessly in the 22nd century, even more than in the 21st. They have the evidence right there in their hands…”

Umeda: “Did you inherit the technology of our time? For example, things like Cloud technology?”

Sanada: “Of course. We certainly inherited the Cloud concept. It can be said that a collection of various technologies was developed after your era of support. I could tell you all about it, but wouldn’t you be better off not knowing?”

Umeda smiled and laughed: “I guess it would be better not to know. Probably because we would only see that from now on.”

Niimi: “Even if we tried to explain technology from a different time, we wouldn’t have a common language. But please don’t feel bad.”

Niimi chose her words carefully, but it was still a difficult conversation.

Sanada: “If you don’t mind, show me your information terminal.”

After considering this, the data center engineer handed Sanada his smart phone. He flipped it around as he carefully examined it.

“This is a surprise…I’ve heard about these old information terminals…I guess this is an early model from your time?”

Umeda: “You could say new models appear one after another in the mainstream…”

Niimi whispered into Sanada’s ear: “I hear that this was the peak of person-to-person communicators.”

Sanada: “I see. It was a time when user demand and IT technology development promoted mutual progress.”

Niimi: “What kind of role does this data center play in Japan at this time?”

Umeda: “Do you understand the term Cloud computing?”

Niimi: “Yes, I understand the image.”

Umeda: “At the present time, Cloud computing is very evolved. This data center is a foundation for it, along with other data centers across Japan. In order to avoid long interruptions at data centers, we provide monitoring 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.”

Although Sanada and Niimi had come across the term Cloud computing many times when learning the history of IT development, this was the first time they had seen it for themselves.

There’s some more Yamato music heading our way, thanks to a successful crowdfunding campaign run by the Osaka Shion Wind Orchestra. Under the baton of composer/conductor Akira Miyagawa, they’ve participated in Yamato concerts and many performances of their own that revitalized their organization and greatly enriched the Osaka cultural arts scene.

Throughout the month of August they conducted a campaign to raise funds for the mastering and publishing of a CD titled Osaka Shion and Miyagawa House of Treasures. It collects ten tracks written by both Hiroshi and Akira Miyagawa and performed by the orchestra. Supporters were offered benefits such as rehearsal tours, concert tickets, and even an original music sheet by Miyagawa.

The CD will contain a track titled Yamato Jazz and is scheduled for release in October.
