Fanroad, March 1983 issue

Right side: a full page dedicated to the three movies in the “spring movie war.” March 12 is still the premiere date for Crusher Joe and Harmagedon, but Final Yamato has bumped back a week to March 19. Fanroad was the first publication to announce it.

I HAVE NO CHOICE BUT TO DO IT!

Shumi’s Space Battleship Yamato
special feature

Yamato finally completes its mission!

Yamato, which has continued to create passionate memories of youth in people’s hearts, will finally reach its finale as it marks a turning point in the 10th year since its creation.”

This is the introduction for Space Battleship Yamato, The Final Chapter, which will be released in March. Even if you’re feeling a bit overwhelmed, think about it for a moment. Think about the magnitude of an anime that continues to live on for ten years. For example, a total of 500,000 cells were used! It’s fair to say that fan club activities and anime publications also got serious with Yamato. It’s not unusual for some of the original female fans to have children now, and many have used it as a stepping stone into society, with some working at advertising agencies to cover rival programs, or others working as writers or editors for anime magazines. I wanted to start this special feature by expressing my gratitude. Thank you for your hard work.

Yamato‘s 10 Year History

Yamato Final Digest

According to space mythology, 14 billion years ago the water planet Aquarius brought a great deal of rain to the Earth, which was then a burning rock, bringing water and the seeds of life. The planet was heading toward Earth in an elliptical orbit. The Earth now faces a crisis similar to Noah’s flood 3,000 years ago, but the people of Earth are not yet aware of this fact.

Some highlights
Bombshell statement!?

Prior to the film’s release, at a luncheon attended by people involved with anime magazines, producer Yoshinobu Nishizaki made the following explosive statement:

First of all, as proof that this Yamato is truly the end, there is a scene of Yamato exploding. However, you don’t yet know what will happen after the explosion…

Hmm, maybe it will turn into a star!!

Next, there are usually a lot of deaths, but this time there won’t be many. However, a main character who hasn’t died before will die this time. (Who is it? You’ll probably guess right away, though…)

Also, Yamato is always saved by a woman, but this time it’s different. Humanity must protect Earth with its own hands!

And now in the spring of their tenth year together, Kodai-kun and Yuki-san (no longer calling them “chan”) have declared that they will be united in body and soul! They are also looking back at recent anime and manga to see what kind of scenes they can create.

That’s all, but now that I think about it, no one tried to ask about Captain Okita…

Shumi’s Space Battleship Yamato Biographical Dictionary

The biographical dictionary, which has become a special feature of the series, is just like a historical anime with too many characters! A focus on the characters, with guest and sub-characters, is also featured.

Since everyone has a different favorite character, there are no portraits this time. Instead, I’ve scattered postcards with Shumi’s praise.

Susumu Kodai

A passionate young man who likes to say, “The universe is love.” He’s actually 28 years old, but outwardly he looks 18. He likes the character for “love,” and thanks to his famous line, 24-hour television was born, and a certain TV network was saved.

A truly normal person who gets angry when someone calls him “Ojisan.” Someone who seems like they can live on love alone.

The protagonist of a passionate and moving youthful SF story. The last surviving hero of the old anime world.

A person with one leg stuck in a coffin. Yuki-san pulls the zombie out.

Kodai image caption: No matter what you say, it’s pretty rough to stay in the lead role for 10 years without being traded. Right, Kodai-kun?

Okita image caption: “When did they say I was definitely dead? Idiot!”

Although he is the acting captain of Yamato, which has saved Earth four times, he is not greedy and does not hold a significant position. He is the protagonist of this story.

For some reason, the captain died early, so he served as acting captain. After that, a rumor spread that, “if you become the captain of Yamato, you will die young.” And there is no one left to become captain, so he is made captain. But since he’s not the right person for the role, it seems he will be forced to drop out of the next production.

A typical prototype who cannot win in the end without relying on someone.

The protagonist is immortal. However he does not undergo Ultra Change. The next time he makes a suicide attack, I hope he shouts, “Glory to the Earth Federation!”

Under the guidance of the esteemed principal (Okita), he grows into a passionate, full-fledged teacher (officer). Perhaps because of his awareness of his status as a clergyman, he is unable to lay a hand on his fiancee.

Yuki Mori

A girl who looks just like the Iscandarian Sasha. “Of course, we’re all Leiji Matsumoto characters,” she says. Analyzer (not his real name) has repeatedly proven that she always wears pure white underpants. Also, in Episode 3 she calls out “Okaasan” (mother) and in Episode 10 she says “mama.” I can’t wait to hear what she says next. (“Kaachan” or “Mommy”?)

She is someone who can clear everything up with just one word: “Kodai-kun…” I worry she might have a seizure. Also known as Yuki the immortal butterfly.

Among the main female characters in Yamato, she is the only ordinary one without supernatural powers. How many times has she been hurt and died together with her lover, Susumu Kodai?

Engaged to Kodai, but still not married. One theory is that there is a universe-wide Yuki Mori fan club, and they order attacks on Earth to prevent Kodai and Yuki from marrying, but this is not confirmed.

The person who activated the Cosmo Cleaner D, shouting “Kodai-kun is going to die!” even as Sanada was suffering nearby.

Someone whose identity isn’t revealed until the second half of the story has a 50% chance of dying.

Kodai’s lover. Her special skills are reviving (she’s the only one who has died twice) and every time “Kodai-kun” appears, he ends up getting injured in some way.

Juzo Okita

Even after his death, he remains in the hearts of the Yamato crew, encouraging them, and finally comes back to life in the final movie, making him the Yamato version of Marg (from Godmars).

The Momoe Yamaguchi of Yamato. No other captain has surpassed him.

He is immortal after all. His white beard is quite cool and handsome. In Farewell he played the grim reaper and became a maniac. It was met with disapproval.

I’d like to see him get into trouble after giving the wrong command. I wonder if there are any parents who would give him such an old-fashioned name after the year 2000. I wonder why he chose a dangerous character like Kodai as the acting captain. Wouldn’t they normally go with Sanada? (Who is now number 2?)

Dessler

It is well known that the timing between voice actor Ibu’s voice and Lopak’s voice did not match, so Lopak had to be remade. But whenever I watch it, I always seem to laugh my head off.

Dessler died. (So lame.)

He was good at adapting to the environment, and before he knew it he had completely mastered breathing techniques outside of radiation. It is not clear whether he used the “air breathing training cast.”

A former enemy of Yamato, he possesses the ability to change shape is quickly as a bat and has the vitality of a snake. His comedic talents during his active days were brilliantly displayed in The Snakeman Show. (A radio comedy series featuring Masato Ibu.)

Part 1: “I am at war. Don’t let a cheap drink ruin my greatest joy!” Part 2: “Gentlemen of Yamato, it’s good to see you again.” “My heart is much closer to yours.” New Voyage: “Come quickly!” “Fire at me, Kodai!” What can I say?

The man who attacked Earth, watched Gamilas get blown away on a whim, messed with Starsha, and performed a cheesy act like, “Shoot my ship, too!” Come on…

“Gentlemen of Yamato…” this is it!!

He is said to be the root of evil, but in reality he is the biggest victim. His planet was destroyed, his loved one was taken away, and it is impossible to talk about him without crying.

We can’t talk about Yamato without mentioning him. The image of, “Oh, there’s a stone ahead!” inevitably comes to mind, probably due to Dessler’s personality. He has the special ability to make his cloak flutter in outer space. He’s probably better than Okita when it comes to revival.

His face was pale at the beginning, but turned blue in Episode 11. It seems he underwent a makeover. (Hyss, too.)

He is famous for his line, “Gentlemen of Yamato, it’s been a while,” which is often imitated by Patalliro.

Dessler image caption: Dessler’s voice has taken on a life of its own and he has become a comedian…

Yuki image caption: The popularity of heroine Yuki Mori seems proportional to the popularity of her voice actor Yoko Asagami.

Starsha

I can’t believe a simple after-image is able to talk so much.

She has super long eyelashes, and it’s rumored that they measure two or three pencils, not just matchsticks.

Don’t name your daughter after your sister.

Shiro Sanada

A psychic with the ability to predict enemy attacks. Using this ability, he has suddenly developed a number of new weapons. This person will likely develop a machine to revive Captain Okita.

Also known as Yamato‘s Senbei-san (from Dr. Slump). He makes a seamless plane that no one knows how to fly, he quickly repairs Yamato, and is an indispensable character in moving the story forward.

Riderman’s cassette arm can be used.

I wonder when those eyes will fall out…

I would like to hear Yasuda-kun’s excited voice say, just once, “I…I…I have cyborg limbs…”

He was cute as a child, so how did he end up with such a face? (Especially his eyes?) He looks just like Hanya from Urusei Yatsura. Some say he’s Groa’s brother…

If this person does anything mean to me, I’ll secretly cut off their limbs that very night!

Daisuke Shima

If Teresa hadn’t saved me, I’d probably end up like Tem Ray by now.

He is always photographed from the same angle. In the TV version of Part 2, he becomes close with Teresa.

Only enthusiasts would know that Shima’s first draft design had him in something close to a pompadour.

Mamoru Kodai

When he stayed behind on Iscandar, he told his younger brother, “You do your best, too.” I see, if you try your best…

He was a sly man who left his daughter Sasha in the care of the single Sanada, saying, “It’s difficult for one man to raise a child.”

The person who played the most roles, including Kodai’s older brother, Starsha’s lover, Sasha’s father, Gamilas’ guardian, Yukikaze‘s captain, and an injured person.

Tasuke Tokugawa

Likes meat dumplings. Looks like Jiro Amos (from Xabungle).

When Be Forever Yamato was produced, he was completely rejected for showing his level of education on “The Thinker” and it was cut from the TV broadcast.

Was not in the family photo with his father Hikozaemon Tokugawa.

Hikozaemon Tokugawa

I guess he probably doesn’t know how many sons he has?

The scene where he and Aiko (his granddaughter) hug each other is like something from Heidi (although they don’t actually hug each other).

Analyzer

They say he’s an older model, but I’ve never seen a robot better than Analyzer.

He has the special ability to get drunk if he pours alcohol on his head. I wonder would happen if he poured a laxative on his head…

He has the ability to investigate and analyze, but this ability mainly affects Yuki Mori’s underpants.

In the past, lifting up a girl’s skirt would have been enough to get attention, but now…that’s right, push Yuki away, too!!

Teresa

No matter how dark the place, even if there’s no electricity, it’s brighter with her in it. Though she may be a bit dark at heart…

The clothes she didn’t wear in the movie were there on TV. How boring…

Sasha

There are only two female names on Iscandar.

Starsha and Mamoru Kodai’s daughter. I don’t understand why she called Kodai, “My little uncle.” Was there also a big uncle?

Domel

The rare special talent of having a butt-shaped chin.

Sho Yamazaki

A person on the first bridge of the 46th junior high school, afraid of the he-men in the engine room.

Mii-kun

In Matsumoto’s works, even the cats are all one.

Shumi’s Space Battleship Yamato Mecha & Terminology Dictionary

Unlike other weaker anime, Yamato is full of mecha that’s more attractive than the characters. If you compile a Yamato Encylopedia and include the terminology…

(Contributions by multiple writers)

Yamato English translation: a mountain

Infinite Data Cannon: a weapon of the Dark Nebula Empire. Before it could reach Yamato, it was blown away by a cannon blast. I don’t know how powerful it was (certainly infinite)…

Captain’s seat: If you sit here silently, you will surely die.

Hyperon Bomb: I wouldn’t be surprised if the inside of this thing was just a dummy.

Tripod Tank: Dog Mac’s ancestor.

Yamato image caption: No matter how many characters survive, the story can’t continue without Yamato!

Uruk image caption: If Yamato were to “crush” an enemy smaller than itself, it wouldn’t look good, so naturally the enemy mecha has to be huge.

Yamato: the ultimate and strongest space battleship. Its body is apparently made of metal cells, and even if it gets a hole in it or the bridge melts off, it regenerates immediately. The interior is a 4th dimensional pocket, housing countless aircraft. Without it, the anime world as we know it today would not exist, making it a great benefactor (?), but it has been around so long that it’s now being forgotten. Like Mr. Kikuchi and Mr. Yasui of Fanroad.

Goruba: Even one of these machines was terrifying in The New Voyage, but three or four of them appear in Be Forever. A mysterious machine with useless weapons.

Blue Noah: Damn! If only you hadn’t failed!!

Love: Because it was used extensively in Farewell to Yamato, it was later mass-produced in the anime world.

Flying object: Sasha’s spacecraft, White colored comets, hyperon bombs, missiles. These are all the reasons Yamato launches. The only exception was in The New Voyage.

Pulse Laser barrage: My dad called it “fireworks.”

“Noda”: When Shiro Sanada gets excited, he adds this to the end of his sentences.

Wind: In Yamato, there is just enough wind in space to blow capes and hair around.

Fans: There are two types these days. Those who think everything about Yamato is good (fan club magazines are almost entirely filled with the opinions of these people) and those who can’t forget the excitement of Part 1 and Farewell, and continue to watch Yamato with a half-cold heart, wondering if the new work will be any good. (The opinions of these people are really necessary, but I don’t see them much in the magazine.) I am of the latter.

Counterattack: When Kodai and the others are in command, Yamato does this very often.

Captain’s seat: Yamato‘s famous “devil’s captain’s seat.” Anyone who sits here is sure to die, fall ill, or get injured. When attacked, the first bridge explodes first, presumably to spite a captain who acts all high and mighty without doing anything.

First Bridge: The safest place on Yamato. If you stay here, you will survive any battle. Therefore, it is occupied by the main characters.

Third Bridge: The most tenacious place on Yamato, where people get killed easily but bounce back in the next scene.

Voice actors: When Yamato first started, there were no wimps who both worked and hunted around for a husband (or so I thought)…

Space Battleship Yamato: A mysterious battleship that can never be defeated no matter how many times it is hit by enemy main guns or missiles. In Part 2, even though it lost most of its combat functions, it had power almost beyond comprehension, such as suddenly firing all its main guns. Incidentally, the reason all the anchor markings were removed this time was because they were too much trouble to paint!

Andromeda: Defeated quickly because it didn’t have the guts. Which gutless idiot said that!?

Analyzer: A peek into his brilliant mind shows he is a simple pervert.

Grodez: Something similar appeared in Blue Noah…

Gatlantis language: In Yamato 2 Episode 9 if you turn the Gatlantean sign upside down, it says “ringo flowers bloom.”

Gamilas language: In the Animage appendix, it is written as “Tsubak kan saruba,” but the correct term is “Tsubak Kan Saruma.” Otherwise, reading it backwards wouldn’t make sense.

Domel’s revenge: Domel failed to kill Yamato on Planet Balan because of a phone call from Dessler, but in Yamato 2 it happened again when Dessler captured Yamato in the hollow planet to take his revenge. “President Dessler, there’s a call from the Emperor…”

BIG ANNOUNCEMENT

The gathered wisdom of fans!?

Captain Okita’s revival plan

The return of Captain Okita was initially considered the biggest mystery in Final Yamato! He returned to Earth asleep and even had a statue erected to commemorate his achievements. He retired to the countryside to recuperate, only to be suddenly resurrected. What idea do you have that goes beyond something so simple!?

Ideas by multiple contributors:

IDEA 1

Earth is under attack and in dire straits. At that moment, the eyes of the Okita statue on Heroes Hill begin to glow, and soon the statue breaks open, revealing the cyborg Juzo Okita.

Narrator: “After Captain Okita’s death, he was turned into a cyborg by Shiro Sanada and continued to sleep inside the statue. However, it was set to automatically awaken when the evil energy surrounding the Earth increased!”

And when Okita finds himself in a pinch, his robotic brother, the artificial human Hijikata, who has been traveling the world to train, comes to his rescue.

IDEA 2

The spaceship Yamato is defeated, Earth is occupied, and a stake is driven into the bronze statue of Captain Okita. Yuki Mori prays, “Captain Okita, please help me!” The statue’s gentle face then changes into one of anger and it begins to move. It then grows gigantic due to a device developed by Sanada called “Sanada Synchron Maxim” and mercilessly defeats the bad guys!

(Yuki Mori suddenly becomes more active in the second half of the story, and begins calling herself “Angel Oyuki.”)

IDEA 3

The dying Kodai screams, “Okitaaa!” The statue of Okita falls (this always happens!) and a robot jumps out. Five robots fly out from the graves of Yamamoto, Kato, Saito, Tokugawa, and Kodai-no-kami to support the first robot.

IDEA 4

Earth senses something ominous happening in space and launches a research rocket. The rocket comes back, hitting Captain Okita! It takes a wrong turn and ends up passing through the “Captain’s graveyard” in space (a place for the wandering spirits of captains who died). Okita continues to cry, wanting to go home! Kodai and the others tie Okita to the “Yuki-chan rocket,” which looks just like Yuki Mori, and send him home.

IDEA 5

Juzo Okita’s body was actually frozen and stored. When his body fell into the hands of the enemy, he was resurrected and modified. However, Okita managed to escape before his brain was modified, and raced through space to save Yamato from peril, disguised as an Astrobike.

Narrator: “Captain Rider Okita Juzo is a modified human. The Dengil Empire, which modified him, is an evil secret society plotting to conquer Earth. Captain Rider must fight against the Dengil Empire for the freedom of mankind!” (Hahaha, this makes it sound like the voice of the Dengil leader is also Goro Naya…)

IDEA 6

Okita is revived without any preamble. Okita gives a plausible explanation to the surprised Yamato crew: “I used up all my energy in the battle with Gamilas, so I went into a yoga slumber for ten years in preparation for my return. Now that my energy has been restored, I’ve been resurrected. Come, everyone, master the art of yoga like me and fight our new enemy!”

Then, for some reason, Okita starts doing aerobics exercises. Yuki Mori, misunderstanding further, applies a shrimp hold to Kodai. Shima begins doing radio calisthenics. (The rest is too gruesome, so I’ll skip it.)

IDEA 7

Lighting strikes Heroes Hill and the statue emerges.

IDEA 8

Footsteps approach Heroes Hill.

Kodai: “Ah, that guy!”
Aihara: “Impossible!”

Then Captain Okita appears under the evening moon.

IDEA 9

“I’m Okita, the new captain,” he says, descending from the captain’s room.

“Oh, Captain Okita!” Kodai and the others are surprised. Then Sanada, Sado, and the others appear.

“Hahaha, you’re surprised, aren’t you? At first we were also shocked, thinking he was Captain Juzo Okita.”

“What do you mean, Sanada-san?”

“Actually, Captain Okita has a twin brother named Jushi Okita. He has followed in his brother Juzo’s footsteps to take over as the new captain.

“Is that so?” Everyone agrees.

IDEA 10

Kodai: “It’s a miracle of love. The universe has performed a miracle.” Everyone agrees.

(Mr. N says, “The theme of Yamato is love.” One of the staff members says, “What? Yamato was about love?”)

(But I wonder if this is enough to convince me. Hmm, I’m confused.)

IDEA 11

“Younger brother, cyborg, clone, it doesn’t matter which one you use.”

“Um, what’s this?”

“It’s the Yamato rin-kake technique. Would you like to use it?”

“No way!”

IDEA 12

When it rains, he grows.

IDEA 13

Okita didn’t die. Tired from his long voyage, Okita fell into a deep sleep when he saw Earth in front of him again, feeling a sense of relief. The tears he shed were from being sleep-deprived or something like that.

IDEA 14

Captain Okita’s son reached his age in just four years.
