Here are the highlights!
Yamato is finally coming to an end after facing the biggest crisis in the series. What will happen to the crew of Yamato? What kind of planet is Aquarius? And what is the Dengil Empire? Let’s take a look at these things step by step.
Captain Okita returns!
One of the topics of conversation this time is the return of the ship’s first captain, Juzo Okita. He fell ill in the first film. However, he did not reach brain death. After undergoing major surgery and recuperating, he returns to captain Yamato. It will be exciting to see what kind of brilliant command he will show us.
What about the love between Kodai and Yuki?
The love between Susumu Kodai and Yuki Mori finally comes to fruition this time. In Yamato, Kodai is always thinking about Yuki, who he left behind on Earth. And when Kodai falls to an enemy attack, Yuki embraces him and prepares to follow him in death. We can expect to see their first love scene.
The death of Shima
Furthermore, Daisuke Shima dies in this episode. Despite being hit by enemy bullets, Shima desperately pilots Yamato. His performance warms the hearts of viewers.
Other crew members who appear include Shiro Sanada, who devises secret strategies against enemy attacks, the humorous Sakezo Sado, and Analyzer, as well as Dessler.
The Mysterious planet Aquarius
Aquarius is said to have brought a great flood to Earth 4 billions years ago, bringing the seeds of life. It is a mysterious and beautiful water planet, surrounded by countless intertwining rings of ice. Queen Aquarius, who lives on this planet, preaches that trials are also a form of love.
The giant enemy Dengil
The Dengil people, whose home planet was submerged by Aquarius, are trying to emigrate to Earth. They were originally humans who built an ancient civilization 10,000 years ago. However, their leader Lugal is so cruel that it is hard to believe he is human. He even kills his own son, Lugal II.
He uses various weapons to stand in Yamato‘s way. When a Hyper Thermonuclear Missile hits a battleship, it becomes attached to it and sends cosmic radiation into the ship. It is a terrifying missile that almost costs Kodai his life.
The gigantic city satellite Uruk is the largest fortress of the Dengil Empire, an eerie planet covered in rocks on the periphery and below, with a futuristic megalopolis at the front of the upper part and a gigantic temple at the rear. It emits super thermonuclear energy, capable of warping even huge planets. It is also equipped with a neutrino beam, a weapon that roasts humans to death.
How will Yamato stand up to Dengil, which has countless battleships? And what will be Yamato‘s fate?
Eye-catching footage
This film incorporates a variety of visual techniques, and a staff of 1,000 people was assembled to make it, an unprecedented number for an anime!
For example, in the scene where the water planet Aquarius races through space, various tests were conducted, including filming cels, double-exposing with a translucent mask, filming actual water, and compositing using special oils. The film used for this process alone was about 8,000 feet long, enough for three TV anime episodes. Approximately 4,500 cels were used for this scene alone.
In addition, various other ideas were utilized, such as using Scanimation and dividing space into three color tones to enhance the dramatic effect. And in this upcoming film, Yamato will appear on the big screen in 70mm for the first time.
Music
Music cannot be forgotten as one of the charms that has supported Yamato‘s ten-year history. The theme song continues to be sung by Isao Sasaki, and other songs have been sung by talented singers such as Kenji Sawada, Akira Fuse, and Hiromi Iwasaki.
The final song will be performed by Junko Yagami, who grew up watching Yamato. Her large scale, transcendent melodies and powerful vocals will add excitement to the epic drama of Yamato.
Also participating this time are Tomoko Kuwae and Tranzam, who are well known for their work in Coca-Cola commercials.
Together with veteran singer Isao Sasaki, they are likely to give Yamato a dense world of sound.
A masterpiece in my memory
