I don't disagree with any of that, but in fairness to Voyager, they're walking a tightrope. If they price these to match US expectations, they run the risk of reverse importation that will cut into their Japan sales. If they don't put them out at all, the Bandai products that will soon be arriving here will have no anime to support them, which puts them on the path to repeat all the Gundam mistakes.

To do this properly, they should have started a big-scale ad campaign about 6 months ago and streamed the series first (leaving aside the sub or dub debate) with video sales to follow. But that would have required a lot more money than they probably have to work with.

This rush to move forward tells me they just couldn't get a US partner to bite within the desired time frame, and now they have to go it alone with the meager resources at their disposal. Methinks if Bandai is the tail wagging the dog, then Bandai should be doing something about it on the marketing side.

Except of course Bandai doesn't care.

Never forget, no matter how popular the Yamato 2199 kits appear to be, Bandai doesn't own it, and I can't help but feel every single release has more 'struggle' than any Gundam kit.

Bandai is Gundam. Upper management seems oblivious to the giri owed Yamato while the gentleman actually in charge of the product line is WELL aware. Were Bandai actually involved we would have had a 'Gundam Unicorn'-style Blu Ray release via Amazon and Right Stuf.

With Voyager, it's 1983 and 1993 all over again. Going it alone, pride (or something similar) preventing them from having anybody who actually knows the product and the market on board, prevents them from listening to anyone, money being insanely tight so physically unable to actually capitalize on any momentum generated... and so, old playbooks.

I believe we are generally agreed that whatever the expectations Voyager Japan has for the American release, the actual sales will fall way under those projections. And they will take away the wrong conclusion from that failure.

Bandai does indeed own Yamato - a major part of it, anyway. All the game, toy, model, and video rights. That's a huge piece of the pie. Stating that they don't care about it flies in the face of that. It's true that Gundam makes them more money and they are more heavily invested in it, but Yamato is certainly not suffering in Japan because of that. Let's not waste any time on a fantasy persecution complex. It has no real evidence backing it up and produces nothing of value.

Emergency necro post due to some recent news - and its not good for us non US fans.

On the recent starblazer.com yamato starblazers news cast the question of whether they would ship yamato 2199 to europe was asked, with the following answer being given -

right now we only ship in US, Canada and Mexico.
We're now talking to a company in Europe,
hope it works!!

firstly note there's no mention of WHICH company in Europe they're talking to [although it was mentioned earlier in this thread that it may be a french company - here's hoping its Kaze].

Now that the subbed "Star Blazers 2199" home video release is out, any impressions? Can any with it in hand confirm if the episodes resemble the theatrical cuts or if the TV broadcast ending is present?

They have the same content as the Japanese video release. The TV edit is not commercially available there, and releasing it on home video would only confuse the marketplace.

I would like to add that after watching the US release, the English Subtitles scripts differ from the Japanese Blu-rays in some instances — upon a cursory view, they made seem the same, but with closer inspection, it looks as if they took the original Blu-ray scripts and made different editorial decisions with certain lines, phrasing, and terminology.

And yet, they still use "Gamilas" rather than "Garmillas" in volume 1. It will be interesting to see if they change it, as they did before.

I wonder.

Maybe they are adding promotional material for the new films?
