Space Battleship Yamato

Yamato brought the Cosmo Reverse System home from Iscandar, which restored the global environment as it was before the Garmillas invasion of the solar system. After finishing its important task, Yamato was enshrined in a submarine dock as a memorial ship, but under the Earth Federal Government’s new “Wave-Motion Gun fleet initiative” policy, it was decided to return Yamato to the battle lines.

Extensive remodeling by Sanada was pushed forward by this stressful decision, including refurbishment of the Wave-Motion Gun. The addition of a factory within the ship, strengthening of the armor, and the addition of anti-aircraft guns give it a more robust form and it awaits a new voyage.

Space Battleship Yamato / final decisive battle specs

In an emergency dock in the Mars area, emergency repairs modified Yamato’s specifications for a decisive battle. This included repair of the hull and relocation of the main gun turret from Ginga, and the addition and improvement of artillery weapons before it took off for the final battle. In addition to its main battery, Ginga transferred anti-aircraft weapons and defensive firearms to Yamato. In addition, the defensive Wave Barrier can be partially developed just after warp, and anti-aircraft weapons can be used. This new artillery weapons system has already been proven on Ginga. Other major changes are that the cosmo radar at the top of the command tower was converted to a large-scale high-dimensional fine radar, and catapults to launch fightercraft were relocated from Ginga to the first hanger for a total of four.

Vanguard armament spaceship AAA-1 Andromeda

A battleship mounted with a Wave-Motion Engine, built as the flagship of Earth Federation aerospace fleet. Its primary characteristic is the concentrated twin Wave-Motion Gun at the bow which fires Wave-Motion energy in a dispersion form that can strike a large number of targets simultaneously. Operation of the ship is reduced by promoting automation, so the crew is significantly smaller than Yamato’s. Other than the first battleship Andromeda, two sister ships were constructed: AAA-2 Aldebaran and AAA-4 Achilles.

About the Andromeda class: besides the new ship Andromeda, four sister ships were built in the Andromeda class. Ships two and four are battleships, three and five are carriers. The second is Aldebaran, the third is Apollo Norm, the fourth is Achilles and the fifth is Antares.

(See Andromeda specs)

Vanguard armament spaceship AAA-3 Apollo Norm

Vanguard armament spaceship AAA-5 Antares

Among the four new Andromeda sister ships, two were built as carrier types (the third and fifth ships). From the results of Yamato’s flight corps operations, the “Wave-Motion Gun fleet initiative” included the construction of carriers. A hangar for the launch and landing of carrier-based aircraft was added behind the bridge. (It carries a maximum of 180 Cosmo Tiger IIs or Cosmo Falcons.) Linear catapults allow the simultaneous launch of 24 craft at the right and left.

Vanguard armament space battleship ZZZ-0001 Andromeda-Kai

The first battleship Andromeda was subjected to emergency repair and large-scale remodeling in the time fault factory. In the Gatlantis anti-matter missile attack in the Battle of Saturn, the ship’s Wave-Motion bow muzzle and Wave-Motion Engine were damaged. It became impossible to warp, so two Dreadnought-class battleships were attached to its sides by gravity anchors, and a return to Earth was carried out via trans-warp.

Like the Dreadnought class, the destroyed Wave-Motion Guns at the bow were enhanced by adding a splitter to the muzzles that strengthened them into a quadruple-spread Diffusion WMGs. The formerly manned ship was reborn as the prototype of a high-mobility combat system with complex autonomous navigation. To avoid the risk of deploying this weapon in an unmanned operation, one crew member was appointed at the opinion of Captain Yamanami. Several identical ships were built, and the YF-2203 unmanned Andromeda fleet was reorganized under this new Andromeda-Kai commanded by Yamanami himself. It was deployed into battle at the absolute defense zone in Mars airspace, and the single crewman needed reinforced space clothing in order to perform high-mobility combat.

Autonomous unmanned Battleship BBB Andromeda Black

Faced with the unimaginable military might of Gatlantis, the Earth Federation decided on mass production of a single-class battleship, creating the Black Andromeda. They are armed with the same artillery weapons as the Andromeda class, but do not carry fighters. High-mobility nozzles have been added to the hull in various places, making possible the intense manueverability of a torpedo boat. The hull color is a unified black.

Spacecraft carrier CCC-01 Neu Balgrey

In order to cope with the unexpected scale of the enemy forces, the production of naval vessels was increased in the time fault factory, and Garmillas created a unified front with the Earth fleet. Rather than the existing Guipellon-class multi-deck carrier, the fleet was strengthened by licensing the new ship of Earth, the Andromeda-class carrier. There is no change to the basic structure of the Andromeda carrier, but electronic equipment for air traffic control, navigation systems, etc. were replaced with those of Garmillas style.

Four vessels were built in advance to organize a new carrier group, and Fomto Berger, who previously experienced fierce battle with Gatlantis, was appointed as the commander. The “Berger Battle Team” consisted of Neu Balgray with another three vessels designated Neu Lambea, Neu Schderg, and Neu Darold. The ships are equipped with Debakke fighters, Dolcia torpedo planes, and the heavy bomber Galunt II with its Wave-Motion drill bullet. The upper deck is protected by a Wave Barrier and warp is possible with the aircraft moored to the hull.

Kongo-class space battleship Ticonderoga

Kongo-class space battleship Yuunagi

The main battleship of the reorganized Earth Federation fleet. They follow the basic design of the space battleship Kongo, mounting new engines with a Wave-Motion Core that enables warp navigation. Its main gun is a 36 cm triple-barrel positron shock cannon with substantially reinforced output. It is equipped with a new style of space torpedo. The fixed positron shock cannon in the bow has an increased caliber and firepower. The captain of second escort squadron ship number 47 Yuunagi is Susumu Kodai.

Prototype tactical combat assualt fighter Cosmo Tiger 1

One of the prototype aircraft competing as a next-generation tactical combat fighter. Its fuselage has a biplane system that expands in order to load as many varied armaments as possible. Its extreme handling characteristics made it impractical for operation as a carrier-based aircraft, so it was rejected as being too complex. However, pilot operation at the moon base was approved, and it plays an active part in rookie training as Akira Yamamoto’s favorite craft.

Type 1 space attack fighter Cosmo Tiger II

A new carrier-based attack fighter operated by the new Earth Federation fleet. Its standard high mobility equipment gives it more attack power than a Cosmo Falcon, dramatically improving its combat performance. From the beginning, variation types were considered to expand their attack specialization, including double seats and triple seats with a gun turret added behind the cockpit. Plans for electronic warfare are also in development.

Length: 16.6m

Type 2 Mobile Space Armor

A small humanoid mobile weapon devised by Hajime Saito as mobile space armor for the Space Cavalry, it is a mechanism simpler than an aircraft that was manufactured in short-term production by Yamato’s internal factory. Both arms have built-in cannons and the shoulders are equipped with pulse-laser guns. Its multiple hard points can be equipped with aircraft armament. It flies via high-powered thrusters on the back, and high-speed movement on the ground is allowed by crawler units at the end of each leg.

Time Fault Control Ship Prometheus

The time fault was born as a byproduct of the Cosmo Reverse System brought back by Yamato, an anti-gravity singularity in which time runs ten times faster than the outside world. The Earth Federal Government utilizes that separate space as a top secret munitions factory, deciding on a huge increase in the number of ships equipped with Wave-Motion Guns. However, because it is not possible to station management personnel there, this Dreadnought-class battleship, equipped with a new Wave Engine, was diverted as a control machine inside the fault factory. In order to enable life support inside the fault, its dimensional intertial canceller uses warp acceleration to maintain the passage of standard Earth time on board. The bridge is expanded over the normal type with its windows blocked and external information displayed on screens.

Main Battleship Dreadnought upgrade / EDF specs, Mars Defense Front specs

The Earth Federation upgraded the specs for these ships to face the city empire that reached Mars airspace, for the tactical purpose of functioning as warp boosters for the unmanned YF-2203 Andromeda fleet under Captain Yamanami’s Andromeda-Kai flagship.

Patrol ship (Wave-Motion Gun fleet design)

A patrol-spec light armored cruiser mounted with a Wave-Motion Gun. It makes excellent speed, allowing for long-term independent missions away from the fleet. It is equipped with a radar system on the upper bridge deck and features a signal flag display with rotating blue lights and holograms. Its weapons include a small Wave-Motion Gun, a small positron gun turret, and torpedo launching tubes at the bow.

Escort ship (Wave-Motion Gun fleet design)

A small ship (frigate) built for high-mobility performance. Originally, the Wave-Motion Gun fleet was to be composed entirely of Dreadnought-class battleships, but the fleet was expanded by developing and mass-producing smaller and simpler gunboats. Its weapons include a small Wave-Motion Gun, a small positron gun turret, and torpedo launching tubes at the bow. The naval battle against Gatlantis off the shore of Saturn became its first campaign. Under these high gravity conditions, its maneuverability became a liability and it was forced into a hard struggle.

Experimental Wave-Motion Battleship Ginga

In order to conduct research on the development of next-generation vessels, this ship was made as a copy of Yamato, including its Wave-Motion system. The Cosmo Reverse System brought back to Earth by Yamato was relocated on board, and its special abilities are utilized in the research. Saki Todo is Ginga’s first captain.

Ship type: Wave energy research ship
Identification number: BBY-03
Length: 333m
Armaments: 48cm triple-barrel positron shock gun turret x 3
Torpedo launch tube x 12 (bow and stern)
Torpedo launch tube x 16 gates (flanks)
Concealed anti-aircraft system (throughout the hull)

Type 52 Zero refitted unmanned autonomous fightercraft Blackbird

Wave-Motion Experiment Ship Ginga was equipped with these unmanned Blackbird fightercraft to prepare for all-out war with Gatlantis. In order to secure human personnel, the Type 52 Cosmo Zero was used as the basis for an autonomous mobile drone system for the lunar defense of Garmillas. The aircraft is colored black with the exception of the nose color for the lead machine, which was manned for pathfinder purposes in a special strategy case. This single craft’s nose was painted blue for distinction.

The “Blackbird Strategy”
Mass-produced Wave-Motion Cores were released in the midst of the enemy fleet by unmanned craft. They were amplified to overload by Ginga’s use of the Cosmo Reverse System, and the Wave-Motion resonance rendered the enemy fleet immobile. A manned unit was needed in the lead to penetrate enemy territory and engineer the release. The operation was decided upon when former Yamato air corps captain Saburo Kato applied as the pathfinder pilot.

Space Fightercraft DWG262 “Tsvarke” personal embassy staff plane

The exclusive craft of Klaus Keyman, resident Garmillas military oficer. It is characterized by the Garmillas patterns on its silver hull. Apart from normal weapons, it is equipped by special depth charges (EMP torpedoes). He joined Yamato for the voyage to Telezart and acts as an ally.

Medalusa-class Heavy Annihilation Battleship

This heavy Gatlantis battleship wields a “Flame Strike Gun” that warps a powerful blast of energy to allow for long-distance bombardment from outside an opponent’s range. Yamato met with a similar warship on its return from Iscandar, which has since been mass-produced and deployed with the Gatlantis fleet in large numbers.

Primary weapon: central gun turret x 6
Secondary turret x 6
Anti-aircraft gun x 6
Missile launch tube x 10

Kukulkan-class assault destroyer

A destroyer that attacks enemy ships with high mobility. The quick-fire gun turrets that are unique to Gatlantis warships vastly improve accuracy by “scattering” a large amount of deadly energy. With this, its focus is to deal out as much damage as possible to an enemy.

Primary weapon: main gun turret x 5
Secondary turret x 3
Anti-aircraft gun x 10

Gaizengan weapons group – Calaklum-class battleship

A heavy battleship of Gatlantis that measures 520m in length. The design concept of its hull is very different from other ships, which characterizes it with a unique operating procedure. It has the same amount of weapons as a battleship, but it is equipped with a special “Lightning rotation gun” firing system. A ring is formed of small torpedo bits that amplify beam energy when fired. In addition, its firepower can further be increased by supplying a large amount of lightning strike bits from multiple ships of the same type.

Length: 520m
Primary weapon: Lightning rotation gun
Large rotating turret x 3
Extra-large rotating turret x 2
Bridge deck turret x 3
Large bridge deck turret x 1

[Translator’s note: “Calakmul” follows the tradition of giving ancient South American names to Gatlantis mecha. See background info here. The name is rendered “Calaklum” in official materials because, according to series director Nobuyoshi Habara, it is easier for Japanese fans to pronounce.]

Early Gostok-class missile battleship Goland

A large missile ship that serves as the flagship of a fleet lead by Goland, one of the great commanders of Gatlantis. The two ultra-giant missiles in the bow are used to annihilate enemy fleets and for planetary strategy. In addition, the two large rounds can be replaced by other warheads according to strategic demands. Although it is impossible to reload the bow missiles at the front line, the turrets and fixed weapons are capable of continuous fire and reloading.

Length: 312m
Primary weapon: ultra-giant missile x 2
Bridge deck missile x 1
Fixed missile launchers x 28
Beam weapon turret (large) x 1
Three-barrel multi-missile gun turret x 4

Three-barrel multi-missile/five beam gun turret x 2
Three-barrel multi-missile/three beam gun turret x 1
Five-barrel missile launcher x 1

Crustacean Assault Craft Deathvatator

The main assault fighter of Gatlantis. It is equipped with a rotary beam machine gun (quick-fire rotating turret) on its upper surface. 8 machine guns are fixed on the front of the hull. It is piloted by a crew of three, and carries six air-to-air missiles on its underside, or it can mount a single large anti-ship missile.

Primary weapon: beam machine gun turret x 1
Machine gun x 8
Air-to-air missile x 6

[Translator’s note: There has been long-standing confusion over the name “Desbatata” for the hermit-crab-shaped fighter. The assumption has always been that it was a misspelled version of “Devastator.” Consulting with 2202 supervising director Nobuyoshi Habara produced another explanation: it probably started out as “Devastator” and was modified into “Death-vatator.” (“Des” being a phonetic Japanese version of “Death.”) Until further evidence is found, we’ll be going with “Deathvatator” in all future texts.]

Needleslave

An autonomous miniature weapon made by copying the technology of mechanized soldiers obtained from Garmillas science slaves. It transforms from flight form to a semi-humanoid ground battle form, and performs antipersonnel attacks using the needle launchers equipped in both arms. It can be attached to an aircraft’s bomb frame in its dagger-like flight form, and can also be launched from a torpedo tube. The back armor plate at the bottom of its fuselage can be removed to become beam reaction armor capable of deflecting an enemy’s positron energy.

Neu Deusular

Based on the core ship that conducted an emergency escape at the culmination of war against Yamato, this ship was built by Gatlantis for Dessler’s exclusive use. In addition to the Dessler Gun, it is equipped with a material transfer system (instant matter teleporter), and it is also possible to suspend a large number of giant Goland missiles from the electromagnetic pylon equipped on the ship’s underside. It also has a stable wave control system that is unaffected by any conditions in space. Existing outside any categorization of existing naval vessels, its presence is the alter ego of Dessler himself.

Gaizengan Weapons Group • Self-destructing Attack Ship Eater I

A large fighter developed to counter the Wave-Motion Barrier. It neutralizes the shield of an enemy ship and pierces its hull. After that, it blindly fires off a revolving gun turret and self-destructs. In the battle of the shore of Saturn, it is carried on Baruzei’s flight deck and launched against the Earth defense fleet at Enceladus.

Gaizengan Weapons Group • Baruzei’s Apocalix-class Carrier

Another ship of the Gaizengan Weapons Group, over 1200m in length. Although it is a large type of aircraft carrier, its scale makes it a mobile bridgehead. It was newly built for Gatlantis’ invasion of Earth with symmetrical flight decks containing enough hangars to carry approximately 600 Deathvatators. Commanded by Baruzei at the naval battle off the shore of Saturn, it carried 80 Eater I’s on its decks and deployed them using centrifugal force by rotating the upper and lower hulls. In addition to its main guns and anti-aircraft guns concentrated on the hull surfaces, it is equipped with a drum-type beam launcher that can be converted to fire depth charges. In addition, the bow has a large beam cannon to clear forward obstacles.

  1. It’s quite clear that the weapon profiles are leaving out a few things. Notably, the Lascaux, Kukulkan, and Medalusa are lacking the antimatter torpedoes mentioned in Ark of the Stars. The Calakmul’s description also doesn’t mention the 4 smaller roundel turrets on its sides.

Hopefully we’ll get more complete weapon loadouts in the future in stuff like the models.

    • Maybe they understood, that anti-matter torpedo, while sounds pretty cool, is actually a pretty bad weapon) The antimatter is notoriously hard to explode fast; it would tend more to “burn”, because the contact between matter and antimatter is only in surface layer – and the annihilation on said level push the matter and antimatter particle from each other, thus making the annihilation rather prolonged process.

The average nukes are cheaper and they don’t threat you own ship, if damaged by enemy fire while onboard.

  2. I had just pre-ordered and payed for my copy of the new Bandai 1/1000 scale model of the
Andromeda from CDJapan,Bandai had really done this version of her a lot of justice for this
    one.

  3. I actually like how the EDF fleet is using the older Pre-Garmilan war vessels, re-equipped for Wave-Motion technologies: it’s much more realistic than the thought of the EDF building a massive fleet of all-new ships in less than a year (automation notwithstanding, they still need crews) while they’re still rebuilding from the planet bombing.

  4. ‘Six-barrel multi-launch lateral beam cannons for close combat x 2’ – Andromeda class stats
I presume these are an evolution of Yamato’s AA guns right? Because these vanguard ships ought to have some adequate AA defense especially for the carrier types…

      • >The model kit specifies at least 16 missile launchers for anti-aircraft use.
        >
        >
16 missile launchers for anti-aircraft use would be pretty much useless given the sort of wave attacks we’ve seen in the series. You really need the Yamato’s style Anti-aircraft pulse laser turrets mounted around the ship to deal with something like this. Missiles to put it bluntly aren’t up to the job.

  5. The Nasca Class Space Carrier for all of you old school anime fans for the classic show, she is also
    known as the Hailstorm Class.

  6. Their is an excellent still of the scene where the Calaklum-class battleship passes close behind the AAA-1 Andromeda. This shown to be a close pass and a simple comparative measurements puts the size of the Calaklum-class at 770 meters with the Andromeda being 444 meters. This puts it about the same size as the Gamillan Zoelguut-class dreadnought (730 meters). Witch do you think is correct, 520 meters or 770 meters?

    • I actually went and measured the dreadnought using scenes from the first episode. I compared it with the Andromeda with Kodai’s ship and with other Gatlantis ships of known size. It was consistently between 900-1000 meters long. The 520 meters is an error.

  7. Are you going to add a section for Bandai’s 2202 model releases? I enjoyed the 2199 one a lot, so I will be looking forward to it. 🙂

    • Not quite sure, but the name is an homage to a battleship in a manga by someone else, unrelated to Yamato. Go back to the earliest report that mentions it and you’ll find more.

    • Apollo Norm is named for a gigantic aircraft carrier in the manga Submarine 707R. The manga was adapted into a two-episode OVA in 2003, which did get a US release on the long-defunct Geneon US label (I have seen copies of DVDs in Amazon Marketplace).

The connection is that Yamato mechanical designer Kazutaka Miyatake was mechanical designer for Submarine 707R, 2199 cast members Aya Hisakawa (Kaoru Nimii) and Jouji Nakata (Frakken) had roles in the OVA, and it was directed by 2199 OP storyboarder and Yamato fan Hideaki Anno (most famous for directing Evangelion).

For footage of the ship, you can see that here, where the romaji spelling “Apollo Norm” is seen on banners throughout the ship which to me rules out the idea that it is spelled “Apollo Nome”.

  8. for the vanguard ships. it’s brilliant and all, but should they just built a traditional aircraft carrier layout
like ww2 style carrier layout with the bridge “island” on the right side of the ship.

    • The CV version of the Andromeda was designed because of all the shortfalls of the old battlecarrier class in the original Yamato 2 TV series. Those ships couldn’t even launch planes as fast as Yamato could, which is a problem when you’re supposed to be a carrier. A more “traditional” carrier design like what you’re suggesting is still only going to be able to launch a handful of planes at a time.

When Apollo Norm launches her fighters in Episode 5, dozens of fighters are spaceborne in a matter of seconds. No design based on a traditional oceangoing CV could do that.

  9. Did the refitted Kongou-class ships have their bow shock cannon replaced with Wave Motion Guns? I remember watching the Saturn battle and seeing them fire them and it looked like a WMG to me, although I could have remembered it wrongly.

    • The ones we see at Saturn appear to have been retrofitted with the same type of wave-motion gun as the Escort and Frigate types. Yuunagi and the other ships of the type at the 8th Floating Continent in Episode 1 don’t. Since we never actually see any Kirishima-type fire her axial bow cannon prior to the ones at Saturn, we can’t say for sure what the firing of a bow shock cannon would look like, but we assume it’s like a single barrel of one of Yamato’s cannons, as Yunagi’s specs on the official site say it’s an axial shock cannon.

  10. In the original Yamato 2 series, I believe you guys hypothesis the heavy automation of the Andromeda led to her destruction when in crashed into Gatlantis. But in Yamato 2202, Andromeda gets even more automated during the refit to the point she only needs a single crewmember to run her. Similar to the USS Vengeance from Star Trek Into Darkness. Only this time it actually becomes a huge strength and proves actually reliable considering how well Andromeda destroyed a hundred of ships in her blitz charge and only succumbing to the extensive battering she took and presumably overheated engines. Whoever programmed the Andromeda’s new autonomous software and added those concealed AA guns deserve medals for their top notch work! Of course, credit has to be given to Yamanami for commanding her as well!
However, I am not so sure about the Black Berserk Andromedas. Considering they are mass produced and fully automated. Do they have weaknesses in contrast to the five original ships considering they were taken out quite easily aside aside from the lack of a human pilot? The firepower is certainly kept, but are they less durable or have weaker wave motion shields? Really want to know your thoughts on the matter. I don’t think the reffited Andromeda fits into their category despite being heavily automated as she is one of the five originals that was hastily converted.

  11. the new ships are amazing and i like the fact they basically kept to the same design as in the original but…is there ever going to be a model kit of the comet empire/ gatlantis city???

  12. After watching clips of Yamato 2202, my daughter was a bit disturbed (but excited) of the Battle of Saturn. In That BATTLE…WOW…where the EDF forces, the Kongo-class & Murasame-class with the crusiers, my question is…..are Kongo- and Murasame-class Unmanned??!!
