Space Battleship Yamato 2199 Report 56

Due largely to a continuing onslaught of campaigns from the Battlefield Infinity mobile game, the level of 2199 activity in March held up to the consistency we’ve seen since last summer. Now that things are officially phase-shifting into the new series, officially announced as Space Battleship Yamato 2202, we have a chance to observe a whole new phenomenon in Yamato history. How long does it take for one series to ramp down as the next ramps up? We’ll be the first Yamato fans to find out, with these continuing reports as an index.

Meanwhile, here’s what went on in March 2016…

March 1: Game news

March 1: Exhibition announcement

The name Toshihiro Handa should be familiar to 2199 devotees by now; he’s the astrophysicist who served as science advisor on the series. Since then he’s given numerous lectures and published a book with Yamato as a basis for astronomical education. He also helped to curate an exhibition for the Sendai Science Museum in summer 2014, which will be revived under the title See the Universe with Space Battleship Yamato 2199. The event will run at the Ueda City Multimedia Center (Ueda City, Nagano Prefecture) from April 9 to May 1 with Handa giving a lecture on April 23.

March 2: Manga chapter 44

Writer/artist Michio Murakawa burned his candle at both ends in March to finish material for the next compilation volume of the 2199 manga. Chapter 44 was slightly delayed from its usual late-February release (at the Nico Nico Ace and Comic Walker websites) and the next one was hot on its heels.

In this 14-page installment, the Izumo mutiny from Episode 16 enters its next phase with Ito rousing rabble on the ship while Kodai’s landing party faces unexpected opposition on Planet Beemela. There are numerous differences between the anime and the manga in this story arc, which become more pronounced as it advances.

See the pages from Chapter 44 here.

March 2: New series announcement

After many long months of speculation, punctuated by producer interviews in the Yamato Crew Premium fan club magazine Ship’s Log, it became evident that issue #13 would be the one to watch for the formal announcement of the new Yamato series. That was confirmed on March 2 with this news flash on the Yamato Crew website:

New series full-scale startup! A special interview you can only read here!! An exclusive interview with the person who holds the key to the new series! Stay tuned to find out the person! To be published at the end of March!

If you followed the daily posts on our Facebook page, you already know what we learned. If not, keep reading.

March 19: Cosmo Fleet Special UX-01 Dimensional Submarine miniature

Numbered “09” in Megahouse’s Yamato 2199 CFSP series, this UX-01 is the third to be released after the Bandai Mecha Collection mini-model and it’s 1/1000 scale big brother. Pre-assembled and fully painted, this is the largest of the three at 6.75” long.

Nearly all of the CFSP miniatures has a gimmick of some kind. With the UX-01, you have the ability to either display it on a stand or pull the top and bottom halves apart and put the upper hull on a special “dimension wake” card measuring about 8” x 5”.

Lastly, the submarine comes with a tiny Cosmo Seagull, the first to be released outside the garage kit world. If it goes back into service in Yamato 2202, perhaps we’ll finally get the plamo version we’ve been waiting for. (Along with a few others.)

March 23: Manga chapter 45

Michio Murakawa blew past everyone’s expectations with a huge 41-page chunk of story that added even more dimensions to his adaptation of Episode 16. The Izumo mutiny goes white hot, an unlikely hero emerges in the fray, and Kodai’s landing party learns that the Beemela people are not quite as dead as they seem. And then the captain…well, see for yourself.

This chapter appeared online at Nico Nico Ace March 23 and at Comic Walker March 30. See the pages here.

March 23: Manga volume 8

In an example of exquisite timing, the online version of chapter 45 arrived on the very same day as its paper counterpart when paperback Volume 8 showed up in Japanese bookstores.

It has now become customary for Murakawa to create three original postcards as incentives to purchase the paperback in certain stores or on day 1. The fact that he does this on top of an already massive workload – without losing an ounce of quality – speaks highly of his dedication.

Volume 8 collects chapters 39-45 with six bonus mecha design pages.

March 28: Ship’s Log issue 13

Right on time, perhaps the most highly-anticipated issues of Ship’s Log arrived in the mailboxes of Yamato Crew Premium Fan Club members with the first big news about Yamato 2202. The news was released online the same day, but Ship’s Log was the only place to get more than the basic info. The inside front cover contained the image above right, and the rest of the issue was truly a feast with the third “Producer Speaks” interview, a long conversation with 2202’s head writer, another fan meeting report, a discussion about the evolution of Yamato’s mecha design since 2009, a feature on classic saga press kits, the next chapter of Yoshinobu Nishizaki’s biography, and plenty more.

Since the issue contained no dedicated 2199 content, this may be the last time Ship’s Log appears in a 2199 report. But no worries – when issue #14 is published in late June, it will almost certainly be part of a 2202 report. Speaking of which, issue #13 is covered in greater depth over at 2202 Report 1! Click here to read it now, or wait for an identical link at the end of this page.

March 31: Space Navy Yard: Illuminated Spaceship Modeling Guide

One of the best parts of being a Yamato fan is being surprised, especially with a product you didn’t see coming. In this case, it’s a lavish 104-page book from Dai Nippon Kaiga and the editors of Model Graphix magazine.

The topic is photography and internal lighting for spaceship models from a number of well-known sources: Macross, Battlestar Galactica, Yamato 2199, Crusher Joe, and Star Trek (TNG & DS9).

The 2199 material fills 28 pages with exquisite photos of Yamato, Kiska, and Mirangal. Order your copy of Space Navy Yard at Amazon.co.jp here.

Fan art

With attention now shifting from 2199 to 2202, new fan art speculating on the forthcoming series is already on the rise. But there are still some nice holdouts, like this image posted to Twitter on March 1 by “Alpharing”.

This moody piece was posted on March 2 by Hazuki Yumata. The caption read, “Slowly, over time we expect a great work.”

Fan models

An interesting pair of repaints popped up this month on Yahoo auctions: a vintage Black Tiger with a Cosmo Falcon-esque paint scheme and a Czvarke garage kit that is just about as green as it gets. Also of interest: a Yamato getting impressively blasted by enemy fire and an extremely rare take on Jupiter’s floating continent.

See photos here.

Garage kits

When an unusual Makoto Harada garage kit crossed onto the radar, further investigation lead to the blog for garage kit maker On Air Works – and a lot more garage kits.

See photos here.

Cosplay

These photos popped up on Twitter (posted by “Azure Dragon”) in the wake of last month’s Wonderfest. “Azudra” dressed as Akira Yamamoto and met up with the rarely-cosplayed Yurisha and Melda.

The trio previously grabbed fandom’s attention when they posed for photos as all three Iscandar sisters (above right).
