Episode 4

The TV monitor at far right showed opening and closing titles. The sign read as follows:

Opening title 1 (non-credit) / opening title 2 (non-credit)
Opening title storyboard restored version (non-credit) / ending title (non-credit)

The opening title of Space Battleship Yamato changed its image and sound several times during its broadcast. All the footage shown here is the opening and ending scenes without staff credits from film discovered in 2024.

Opening title version 1 was broadcast with Episodes 1 and 2, and version 2 was broadcast from Episode 21 onward. The picture was restored by re-shooting a cel that Ryusuke Hikawa had kept for many years, a shot of Yamato rising from the sea surface, which was made at the time of production but not actually used.

The non-credit version of the ending was shown for the first time at the 50th anniversary screening of Space Battleship Yamato on October 6, 2024.

(Running time: about 7 minutes)

Special note: the storyboard shown at the bottom of this photo was drawn by Yoshiyuki Tomino, who went on to create the Gundam franchise. His work on this episode was his sole contribution to Yamato, and he has refrained from commenting on it ever since.
