Opening pages: synopsis of the film’s climax

No more Yamato will be made. It lives in your heart!

Producer Yoshinobu Nishizaki is determined!

That is the opinion of Producer Nishizaki, who made this film, and others involved. Mr. Nishizaki said, “I was very much aware of the short production time of Part 2, and of the fact that Susumu Kodai had told me in Part 1 that, ‘We should not fight, we should show love.’ As a result, I did not intend to make a Part 2. But in the end, we made it anyway. Now I believe that I have depicted all aspects of the main character, Susumu Kodai, including his way of life and his love for his girlfriend.”

“For the viewer, Yamato is about the quality of the drama and the music, the mecha and so on. I think that Part 2 was a synthesis of all of these. I would like to keep the connection that was formed between me and my fans through Yamato. I think it is possible to make the most of this connection even without Yamato. I have no intention of making a Part 3 of Yamato at this time.”

Producer Nishizaki clearly stated that he has no intention to create Part 3.

Letters to the Editor

However, many Yamato fans have expressed their hope that “Yamato will come back to life.” In fact, the editorial department of this magazine has received many “long waiting voices” for more Yamato. Here are some of them…

I couldn’t help but cry when I saw the film. I have never loved the person next to me, my friends, or the Earth as much as Susumu Kodai and his friends. Yamato taught me the beauty of loving others. Please don’t let Yamato end.

(Takao Yoshida, Tokyo)

Producer Nishizaki says that Part 2 is the end of Yamato. From the perspective of the story, this is certainly the end of Yamato. But is there anything else around us today that is as inspiring as Yamato? I want Yamato to come back to life, no matter what it takes.

(Keiko Sakiyama, Shizuoka)

Yamato is everything to me. I can’t imagine a world without Yamato. I definitely want Yamato Part 3 to be made.

(Yukio Yamane, Osaka)

I can’t believe that Yamato is gone. Susumu Kodai and Yuki are dead. But I hope that Part 3 will be made to remember their legacies. Even if Kodai is dead, we still have Shima and Aihara. And there must be more evil in the universe.

(Koji Miyaji, Kagoshima)

UPPER LEFT SECTION:

With these ideas, will Yamato come back to life?

Ideas created with the enthusiasm of fans and readers

What if Susumu Kodai and Yamato are revived in “Part 3”? How could that come about? That would be a very difficult task, given the “ending” of Part 2. But it is not impossible.

Idea 1: Shima and Aihara as the main characters

I am one of the people who did not want Part 2 to be made. I think it is nonsense to talk about a Part 3. But if they have to, I would like to make Aihara and Shima, who survived Part 2, the main characters, and start with the concept that they see Kodai’s ghost on the far side of the universe…”

(Zendai Sato, representative of “Yamato Lovers Club Cosmo”)

Idea 2: Make Susumu Kodai’s younger brother the main character

The younger brother of Susumu Kodai, in other words, a third son, would be the main character. How about a concept where he inherits his brother’s legacy of “love for humanity and love for the universe”? If Yamato is wrecked, then a new Yamato should be built with the national budget.

(Yasuo Sakakiyama, editor of “Space Battleship Yamato” doujinshi)

If the above two ideas are combined into one, Part 3 is not impossible. Aihara and Shima have valuable experience fighting against the Gamilas and White Comet armies, so it would not be surprising if they were appointed as battle captains. Susumu Kodai’s younger brother, who was studying abroad, returns to Japan upon hearing of his brother’s death. It would not be unreasonable for him to continue Susumu Kodai’s legacy.

Idea 3: Susumu Kodai is alive

A fan named Michiko Yoshida (16 years old) has a slightly different idea…

In the last scene of Part 2, Yamato is thrusting forward as if plunging into the darkness of the universe. Eventually, it emits light and disappears with a loud noise. But before this, Teresa persuades Susumu Kodai to board a lifeboat that she had prepared. She fully understands his determination and says that if he loves space and the Earth so much, he should survive and serve the people of the Earth. Kodai agrees with Teresa’s persuasion and boards the lifeboat. Eventually, he returns to Earth to bury Yuki Mori.

Idea 4: Kodai’s brother Mamoru returns

Yamato fan Yuji Komori (17 years old) has another idea…

Susumu Kodai’s older brother Mamoru, who remained on Iscandar in Part 1, returns to Earth with Starsha after hearing of his younger brother Susumu’s death. The elder brother takes the lead and joins forces with Shima, Aihara, and others in a mission to defend the Earth. The first and third sons could join forces and fight to carry on the legacy of the late Susumu.

In any case, it is everyone’s wish to “see Yamato again.”
