The Japanese term for voice recording is “afreco,” a portmanteau of “after recording.” This term describes the act of recording lines after a film has been completed, and matching the visuals on the spot. The closest American term to this is “ADR” for “Automated (or Addition) Dialogue Replacement,” but that usually applies to replacing dialogue that was previously recorded. The “afreco” process starts with a silent image.
