Space Battleship Yamato: The Final Chapter

Released March 1983, Distributed by Toei

This is truly the end!

This time, the English title is Final Yamato. This long-running series is coming to a definite conclusion.

As a mega-hit series that has sparked numerous social phenomenae and even given rise to the current anime boom, its culmination will be on an even grander scale than ever before.

Once again, a new invader, the space fleet of the Great Dengil Empire, appears before Earth’s humanity. However, an even more terrifying event looms over Earth: the mysterious planet Aquarius approaches. Aquarius is a planet made entirely of water. It approached Earth four billion years ago, bringing water and life to the planet. However, if it were to approach Earth again, humanity would be wiped out by a great flood!

Yamato is capable of fighting both alien and human enemies. But even its Wave-Motion Gun is powerless against this inevitable fate.

But that isn’t all. Another galaxy suddenly appears in our galaxy through a dimensional rift, crashing into many planets. The Bolar Federation, which had previously fought Yamato, and Dessler’s Galman-Gamilas Empire are caught up in the conflict and left to their own devastation. Dengil, one of Aquarius’ earliest prey, launches an invasion in an attempt to colonize Earth. It’s an unprecedented double or triple crisis!

Yamato, the last hope, loses most of its crew in a battle with the Dengil Empire, and even Susumu Kodai falls. His fiance Yuki Mori is so heartbroken that she turns a gun on herself, intending to take her own life…

Producer Yoshinobu Nishizaki, who also directed and wrote the script, demonstrates his extraordinary enthusiasm for this “final chapter.” The singers who will perform the always-talked-about theme songs have also been decided: Junko Yagami, Tomoko Kuwae, Tranzam, and Isao Sasaki. The screening format is an astounding 70mm widescreen. As expected of Yamato, there seems to be no shortage of topics to discuss.

By the way, this time, Yamato is commanded by none other than Captain Okita. Why is he here, when he was supposed to be dead? You’ll have to watch the movie to find out.
