Publication development at the time of broadcast

When Yamato was broadcast in 1974, the term “media mix” [multimedia] as it is known today did not yet exist. However, Terebi Manga works (a general term for anime and tokusatsu at the time) were often developed in conjunction with publications such as children’s magazines. Yamato was serialized in Bouken Oh (Akita Shoten) by Leiji Matsumoto, and a picture story was serialized in Shogakukan’s school magazines.

Another manga by Yuki Hijiri was serialized in Terebiland (Tokuma Shoten), and Asahi Sonorama also published manga by Akira Hio, novels by sci-fi writer Arashi Ishizu, and an illustrated encyclopedia in picture book format.
