As someone who has absolutely no artistic talent, I truly respect the creative talent of drawing. While I’m familiar with art, I’m also surrounded by several manga artists and illustrators who are closer to me due to their work. Among them, Kia Asamiya (Kia) is, to some extent, in a league of his own. While I’m a little older than him, speaking as a contemporary, Kia’s work is truly remarkable.

I went to a preview of Kia’s “HONEY COME Original Art Exhibition.” It was held in the stylish Red Brick Warehouse. There were two buildings, Building 1 and Building 2, and I had a hard time deciding which was Building 1. Nearby, a huge ferry was blowing its Yokohama-esque whistle.

When I entered the exhibition, I was overwhelmed by the sheer volume of artwork. Kia himself said that even this was carefully selected. Several staff members I knew were there, busy hanging the exhibits. So I thought I should help out a little, and started hanging the works. Actually, this was quite difficult, what with keeping the pictures level. As someone who’s used to just looking at things on display, it made me realize once again that when participating in events and exhibitions, I need to take into consideration the effort and hard work of the sender.

Anyway, the staff and the guests who were guided in at this time were all working together in the venue. It was great to have this kind of atmosphere, this large-scale original art exhibition that brings together Kia’s artistic ability and personality. But the most important thing is the quality of the works. And there’s no doubt about it, each piece exudes a meticulous sense, and it’s never boring to look at them at your own pace.
