The mystery of “3199”
Dark Invasion, the first chapter of Be Forever Yamato REBEL 3199 was released on July 19th. Harutoshi Fukui is the general director in charge of the series composition and scriptwriting. He was in charge of the series composition and scriptwriting for Yamato 2202 and Yamato 2205, and is now the general director of the latest work.
Fukui has previously spoken about 3199 in interviews and on stage, calling it “my greatest masterpiece.” Why did he say it was his “masterpiece”? What does the title “3199” mean anyway?
The mystery of “3199” will be revealed in Chapter 2
REBEL 3199 is a reinterpretation and reconstruction of the original third movie Be Forever Yamato released in 1980. There are 7 chapters in total, and Chapter 2, Red Sun Rising, will premiere November 22nd. 3199 does not begin in the year 3199, but in 2207, two years after Yamato 2205. In Chapter 1, it is not clear why it is called 3199.
The catch phrase for 3199, announced in February 2022, is “Change the future. The enemy is…Space Battleship Yamato.” It’s interesting to know what “future” means.
In an interview, Fukui talked about the mystery of 3199. “It will be revealed in the next chapter. In the original work, there is a surprise box that is opened at the end, but when the second chapter begins, it will all be unlocked. Even more surprises await after that. Once you’ve experienced the surprise box, it will no longer be a surprise, so we’ll open it from the beginning and show it to you. From there, something incredible will happen, and you may wonder if another surprise box will open.”
The mystery of 3199 will be revealed in the second chapter, but as Fukui said, not all the mysteries will be revealed then. It is possible that the mystery will deepen even further.
The final scene is amazing!
About taking on the role of general director, Fukui said, “I knew it would be difficult, but I accepted the role because I had the idea that I could create something great. I wanted to do it even if I had to take full responsibility. The script is finished. I haven’t said this much myself up until now, but I think it’s the best thing I’ve ever made. It’s my best work to date, including my novels. That’s why I accepted the role of general director. I think I’ve created the story I wanted to tell. I hope you’ll look forward to it.”
At the opening day stage greeting for Chapter 1 on July 19, scriptwriter Hideki Oka talked about the developments from Chapter 2 onward. “It’s going to be tough. I received Mr. Fukui’s concept two years ago. I know how you’ll feel. You might think, ‘Harutoshi Fukui!!’, but trust me. The final scene is amazing!”
It’s going to be a long journey with seven chapters, but expectations are high for the final scene of this masterpiece.
