Yamato Mechanics, Part 9: Bolar battleships

A series explaining the mechanics of battleships and other vehicles appearing in the remake series of Space Battleship Yamato from Yamato 2199 to REBEL 3199. In the ninth installment, we introduce two battleships from the Bolar Federation, one of the giant interstellar nations. We take a closer look at this mysterious military force that has yet to establish formal diplomatic relations with Earth or Garmillas.

Bolar Gun

The Kurotoga class is equipped with one Bolar Gun at the bow. The two gun ports allow for adjustment of the firing angle (presumably similar to the function of Earth’s separation-type Wave-Motion Guns). The Amanga class, on the other hand, features horizontal gun ports and other differences.

Positron Cannon

In Bolar language, it is called “Anne Lantir” (Light Cannon). It operates on the same principle as the positron cannons used by Garmillas. Like the Amanga-class missiles, it has undergone minor specification changes, and the color of the beam varies depending on the construction period due to differences in polarization rates.

Bolar is one of the oldest interstellar nations, including its imperial era, and this long history has contributed to the high level of sophistication of Bolar Federation spacecraft.

Many Bolar ships have their main armament built into the hull and use a concealed system that appears when in use. This is thought to be because Bolar Federation ships often travel through dense interstellar space.

The main engine is based on the same principle as the Iscandarian Wave-Motion Engine, which expands excess dimensions within the core to generate energy. This system, known as “Kogdahl Aniasur” in Bolar, translates to “Dimensional Expansion Engine.” As a result, it is susceptible to the effects of suppressive wave resonance waves. During Garmillas’ operation to seize the planet Galman in 2204, many ships were temporarily rendered unable to navigate due to a wave resonance phenomenon triggered by a super Gelvades-class large transport ship.

Additionally, many Bolar ships are equipped with weapons such as wave guns and Bolar guns (“Abro Lantir” [Cannon of the Great Victory]), which are equivalent to Dessler guns. These are not merely offensive weapons but are also said to serve the role of removing obstacles in the direction of travel.

The Bolar Federation has no formal diplomatic relations with Earth or Garmillas, and as of 2204, little information was available about it. As a result, the official names of the ships encountered and engaged in combat were unknown, and they were assigned identification codes.

During the Galman Capture Operation, the Bolar battleship Type A was referred to as the Kurotoga-class standard battleship. “Kurotoga” means “heroic action.”

Under the 13th Plan, a project proposed and implemented by the Permanent Management Agency, the mass production of “standard” battleships with stable performance was planned. The Kurotoga class was developed to meet this requirement and is currently under construction (its official name within the Bolar Federation is the 13th Plan Kurotoga-class standard battleship). Despite being a design from over half a century ago, it continues to be built as the Bolar Federation’s main battleship with minor modifications.

Additionally, the Amanga-class missile battleship, referred to as the Bolar battleship Type B, was constructed as a battleship with high firepower to support standard battleships (its official name within the Bolar Federation is the 15th Plan Amanga-class missile battleship). Like the Kurotoga class, this ship remains deployed as one of the Bolar Federation’s main battleships. Notably, the missile armament in use has been updated even after the conclusion of the 15th Plan, and ships constructed later have slight differences in specifications compared to those that entered service earlier. The name “Amanga” [Great Destruction] was derived from its ability to demonstrate the power of its missiles.

In addition to being deployed and operated on the front lines for a long time, one theory that supports the technical maturity of the Bolar ship is that a Kurotoga-class ship washed up on Mars, where the Mars Autonomous Government discovered and analyzed it to build a new type of space battleship. Later, the technology of Martian space battleships became known to Earth, and had a major impact on the ships of the United Nations Space Navy. It is said that the reliability of the basic design of the Kurotoga-class was the reason why it was such a technological leap forward for Earth’s space battleships.
