Space Battleship Yamato theme full version

As revealed in the Yamato Party 2009 report, the biggest surprise was the addition of two additional verses to the famous theme song, which Japanese fans have actually known about for many years, since they were first published in a foldout posterbook that came with the September 1978 issue of Adventure King magazine (shown below).

The origins of the extra verses are a bit sketchy, but it is believed that they were written in 1976 or 77, and NOT by the original lyricist, Yu Aku. Apparently, he disavowed them while he was still here on Earth and his family has since advocated that they not be made official. Thus, they have never turned up in any commercial recording.

Regardless, we proudly present the entire song here.

Special thanks to Yamato Party chairman Masaru Enomoto for providing the text and Michiko Ito for translation assistance.

Original Japanese

Verse 1

Verse 2

Verse 3

Verse 4

Translation

Verse 1 (translation by Ardith Carlton)

Farewell, Earth / the ship we’re traveling in is
Space Battleship Yamato
Through space and toward far-off Iscandar
Fate on our shoulders, we begin the journey
Surely we will return
We cheerfully answer the people waving their hands
We depart from the galaxy, going to Iscandar
To a great distance, Space Battleship
Yamato

Verse 2 (translation by Ardith Carlton)

Farewell, Earth / the people we love
Space Battleship Yamato
Carrying out our mission to rescue Earth
Fighting men, burning romance
If we don’t do it, someone must
We’re the ones expected to do it
We depart from the galaxy, going to Iscandar
To a great distance, Space Battleship
Yamato

Verse 3 (translation by Tim Eldred)

Farewell, Earth / the green star
Space Battleship Yamato
A flower blooms on a hill, a bird sings in the forest
Fish in the clear water forever and ever
Wishing our beloved can smile
And sing a song for happiness
We depart from the galaxy, going to Iscandar
To a great distance, Space Battleship
Yamato

Verse 4 (translation by Tim Eldred)

Farewell, Earth / we will meet again
Space Battleship Yamato
We journey far to the field of battle
The thread of life is strained
Shouting in our hearts this is not farewell
Now we enter into the dark purple road
We depart from the galaxy, going to Iscandar
To a great distance, Space Battleship
Yamato

The 4-verse lyrics were later reprinted in two other places, both published in March 1979: Office Academy’s script book for the first TV series and Leiji Matsumoto’s Yamato Part II All-Color manga.
